The
Canadian communication theorist Marshall McLuhan specified the term „Global
Village“
in the
sixties as the modern world which grows together through electronic networking.
In the
first
instance McLuhan refered his term with the TV. Nowadays the expression is not
used
anymore in
the media theory.
I think in
an era of smartphones, VoIP, blogs and social networks the term characterizes a
culture
which evolved rapidly in the last few years. This culture makes it possible to
be in
contact
with people all over the world to share our life with them. These new
possibilities
bring
significant advantages but they can also be very time-consuming. To share my
travels
and my stay
abroad with my loved ones at home and all over the world, I finally decided
to create my
own blog - my own global village. I always benefited from reports and forum
entries on
the web. Therefore, I want to give something back and share my experiences and
tips with
all travellers and cosmopolitan readers.
I hope you
have fun following my blog! I am happy to receive comments, questions and
suggestions
directly in the blog or via email (katrin@my-global-village.com).
Finally a
quote that I recently found and think fits very well here.
"A
ship in harbor is safe, but that's not what ships are built for." (William
Shedd)
